The Experimental Aircraft Association's annual meet and fly-in, AirVenture, is held at Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in the last week of July.
The EAA's headquarters are here, along with their superb museum and their own turf runway - Pioneer airport, which houses part of the museum's collection in several vintage hangars crammed with vintage aircraft. AirVenture is the world's largest aviation gathering, and for the week, Wittman's control tower becomes the world's busiest - there can be up to eight simultaneous landings on the three main runways, plus the movements on the ultralight runway and at Pioneer Airport, both of which are close to the active runways. And there's the seaplane base. The ATC is a wonder to listen to! I've got to get back there soon... |
