Lake Hood Seaplane Base |
"The world's busiest seaplane base" was ice-covered until about ten days before we got there, and ski-plane operations had only recently given way to floatplanes. Being there early in the season meant that snow still covered the nearby mountains, giving us some spectacular views, and there were many large snow mounds all around. The base's hard runway was closed for maintenance, so wheel-equipped aircraft had to taxi the short distance to and from the adjoining Ted Stevens Airport. I was surprised at how few amphibians were around, until someone told me how much amphibious floats cost! There are over 550 photos in this section, of over 350 aircraft, so I've divided them into six pages to keep them to sensible sizes. There are so many Cessnas and Pipers that they, along with Beavers and Otters, merit their own pages. I was wandering around the lake on 5, 6, 7 and 14 May. |
