Nenana is a quiet airfield about 55 miles south-west of Fairbanks. Kenai, pronounced Keen-eye, is only a 20 minute flight south-west of Anchorage, but a drive of about three hours, so it has scheduled flights from Ravn Alaska and Grant Aviation. We chartered the Beech 99 more for the flight than the destination, though its modern terminal has a gift shop and very nice cafe. Chena Hot Springs is a resort with an Ice Museum and its own airstrip about 55 miles north-east of Fairbanks. Our coach broke down here and while we waited for a replacement from Fairbanks many of us had lunch in the hotel's excellent restaurant. DC-6 N12347 is in the yard of a house on Little Fox Trail, about 14 miles north-east of Fairbanks. The owner has said that it was planned to become a house, and is mounted on piles. That plan appears to have been put on hold. |
