Flying Leatherneck Museum, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego |
| This museum was just outside the entrance to MCAS Miramar, the famous one-time home of the Navy's TopGun fighter pilot training programme. We received a warm welcome on what was a very rainy morning. It's a sort of annex to the main Marine Corps Museum in Triangle, Virginia, but a lot more photographer-friendly. The museum was founded at MCAS El Toro, but moved here in 2000. It is returning there now that El Toro's been converted into a cultural park. Most of the aircraft were cleared from the Miramar site in 2021 and are undergoing maintenance and repair while the new site is readied for opening, planned for late 2026. By the way - they can't decide whether it's Leatherneck or Leathernecks, so take your choice. Leatherneck is a slang term for a member of the US Marine Corps. Our visit was on 30th April. |
