Piana delle Orme museum, Latina

A marvelous 'agricultural' museum to the south of Rome. Set in pleasant countryside, the grounds are very attractive, and the many exhibition halls are filled with a wide variety of displays all superbly restored and maintained, covering a broad variety of subjects, including military aircraft. Even the large collection of model aircraft is well made, and many are displayed in spacious 'sky' scenes — a refreshing change from the usual crammed-together cabinets.

With a good cafe and a huge shop specialising in combat clothing and other militaria, this is a remarkable museum, well worth going out of your way to visit. It's about 40 miles south-east of Rome, and we visited on 15 June.
